Recruitment process

Pre-employment medical assessment

Prior to an offer of employment being made, candidates will be required to undertake a comprehensive Pre-employment Medical (PEM) examination with the Brigade Medical Officer (BMO).

Candidates are required to meet standards of medical fitness for firefighters and complete a drug screen in accordance with the drug policy.

During the PEM stage, candidates are required to provide their vaccination history including;

  • COVID-19 – 3 doses
  • Hepatitis A – 2 doses
  • Hepatitis B – 3 doses
  • Measles, mumps, rubella (typically childhood vaccinations)
  • Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis in the last 10 years
  • Varicella is recommended

Vaccination antibodies may wane over time and antibody levels are confirmed for Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps and Rubella with blood tests during the PEM process. If the blood tests show low immunity, a booster will be required.

Incomplete vaccinations will delay progression through the PEM stage.

To streamline the PEM process, complete vaccinations supported by a copy of your vaccination record from your MyGov account is preferred. For candidates with paper records, please bring any originals and a photocopy for file on the day of the PEM examination.

Conditions, including but not limited to asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, hearing or eyesight disorders (including colour blindness) may result in you being deemed unfit to undertake firefighting duties.

Please note that specific medical advice pertaining to your medical condition can only be provided upon successful progression to the pre-employment medical assessment stage of the recruitment process.
